Mypsace QA
There is a website that most teens, especially those in the United States, are intimately familiar with. MySpace has become a brand name, a trademark if you will, of networking. It is how friends come together and keep track of one another. In recent years it has come under speculation as to whether or not it is shaping the world's population.
Is it something harmful from which predators can stalk their prey? Or is MySpace simply a meeting ground for people to connect with others from all over the world? It is relatively young but it has grown tremendously in the past few years. More and more people are discovering the truth out for themselves. In this article we will discuss the basics of this website and how you can make your own decisions on its validity.
What is MySpace?
MySpace is a social networking site for people from the age of fourteen up. People use this website to stay in touch with friends. They also use it to network and make new acquaintances. Some even use the website as a dating service. It is a site that is what you make it. You can create a profile and keep it private so that only your friends on your friend's list can view it or you can make it public so the whole world can see it. It is an excellent way to express your views through blogging or through your artwork. Most musicians now have MySpace accounts so that members can hear their latest hits.
When was MySpace created?
For those MySpacers that have been on a while it is hard to fathom that it has only been available since August of 2003. Before that social networking sites were very limited and most required some form of payment. It seems as if this site has been around forever but it is a relatively new way to communicate.
Who created MySpace?
Most people think that Tom is the creator of the website but they would be wrong. Yes, he is the first friend that you get when you create an account and yes, he posts bulletins and announcements. But in actuality there was a whole team behind the creation of this social networking site. It all stems from eUniverse. The founder and CEO of eUniverse, Brad Greenspan, along with Tom Anderson (the aforementioned Tom), Josh Berman, Chris DeWolfe and a host of other programmers all had a huge hand in the start up. Other websites faced the problems of hosting, infrastructure and a variety of other start-up website problems. But these founders did not. They were already very familiar with websites and already had a top team in place to handle the miscellaneous needs that would arise.
Do you have to pay to be a member of MySpace?
There was talk at one time of making members pay for access to the website. Other websites were making their members pay but Brad Greenspan did not want a website like the others. MySpace's revenue is generated through their partners and their affiliate programs. Members never have to pay a single cent. It was this attention to how the public would feel that helped propel MySpace into becoming the number one social networking site of its time. In 2006 the site partnered up with the world's number one search engine Google. They signed a $900 million dollar deal that has since lined both companies/websites pockets.
How do I create an account on MySpace?
The very first step to creating an account is to go to www.myspace.com. On the left hand side of the page you will see a link to create a new account. Simply click on the link and start putting in the necessary information. It will ask for your username, an email address and your date of birth. After you have confirmed your account through the welcome email, you can start modifying all of your information and creating the actual page. Each person's profile is unique to them. You can add your favorite pictures, songs and even blog about your day. There are sections such as "About me..." that you fill in to let other people know who you are and what kinds of things that you like. Creating an account is very easy and uploading pictures is a breeze with their step by step details.
Do you have to be a certain age to have a profile on MySpace?
Yes, you do have to be a certain age in order to have a MySpace account. You have to be at least fourteen. Unfortunately that rule is not strictly enforced and many young people lie about their ages in order to have an account. This has become an issue of great debate as more young men and women are being stalked online from predators. It is important as an adult and parent to carefully monitor your child's web surfing habits. If you think that they have a MySpace account and they are under fourteen, you need to have it removed. If they are over fourteen you can still monitor their online activities. Some parents may feel that this is spying on their children but protecting a child should be the number one priority. You may not approve of all of their friends online but at least you can make sure that they are safe and not giving out any personal information to strangers.
How do you create your MySpace profile and make it unique?
Many people make the mistake between having an account and having an actual profile. The account just gets you onto the website but the profile lets the world know who you are and what you like. After you have created your account it is time to personalize your profile. Start with the "blurb" sections. A blurb is just a short statement that explains your likes and dislikes. MySpace has several sections that you can fill out. There is an About Me, Music, Books, Basic Info and many other places to show your favorite things. Plus there is always the ability to blog. Blogging can be anything from posting humorous jokes to writing about your day. You do not have to make it public either. You have the option of keeping both your profile and your blog private so that only friends can view your personal information.
How do I get friends on MySpace?
Once you have your profile created you can add friends a few different ways. The easiest way is if your friends already have an account of their own. Then you simply type in their username, email address or name and you can add them to your friend's list. If your personal friends do not have an account you can also send them an email from your account requesting that they join MySpace. The second way to get friends is by joining topic groups. You can find a topic group that you are interested in and simply request that people add you as a friend. Once you have your profile on a while you will start getting friend requests from other's that are browsing through the site. They may have many similarities and want to get to know you. This is a social networking site after all.
How do you create those unique layouts and backgrounds on MySpace?
People who have HTML experience can easily create their own unique layouts and backgrounds. But for those that are not so much into computer languages and programming you can always find generators online. These generators have pages and pages of backgrounds and such stored on the website. You simply find the layout and background you want, copy the code given and then paste it into one of your profile sections. After you save the changes you can view your new profile. If you do not know where to search for one of these generators you can always use Google. There are hundreds of results that will come up and you can pick and choose from which ones work for you.
How can I upload pictures to my MySpace profile?
Let's take this step by step. The first thing you are going to do is login to your account. Next you will go to the Profile tab at the top of the screen. It will open a drop down box. From there you will want to select My Photos. Once that screen loads you will see a red link that says "Upload Photos" near the top left of the screen. Once you click on that red link it will take you to a page that lets you upload your photos. There is one catch. You can only upload a certain size picture. There is a maximum kilobyte that is allowed. You also cannot upload provocative or nude pictures.

Today's Tip On Myspace
Hollywood talent scout Frederick Levy says that it takes talent and an extroverted personality to become a "YouTube" phenomenon. "There are a lot of people who aren't very likable, yet are very popular on YouTube," Levy admits. "Take Chris Crocker, who was behind the "Leave Britney Alone!" video. I don't think he's the most likable person on the net, as he is a little eccentric and crazy. Likable people are watched a lot, but so are eccentric people." The site has discussed sharing royalties with popular producers but no model is in place as of yet. For now, it seems that other sites and advertising campaigns will try to lure the young stars away with promises of peanuts, or perhaps a few people will launch really successful careers! |
